Just got back from the Con a while ago.

Panels were OK. Hit-and-miss as always. Best one was one we'd seen before: Disorganization XIII's SPOILER: The Panel - The Sequel. But it's OK because it was just as hilarious the second time around. MJ wanted to go to some fan fic panels. So we did. They sucked. Bought lots of Stuff.

Anime: Love Hina, Last Exile, and Shigurui: Death Frenzy

Haruhi Suzumiya (from The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya)

Yoko (from Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann)

I haven't actually seen Gurren Lagann, but I want to. Due in no small part to the girl with the gun.

Maka Albarn from (Soul Eater)

I haven't seen this show either (Funimation has the license, but it hasn't been released yet). The story looks interesting, and this was a cool figure, regardless, so I bought it.

I also got a little chibi Yoko with her rifle for work, because I don't want to bring the big one into the office.

Trinkets: Two cell phone charms (Sousuke Aizen from Bleach and Riza Hawkeye from Fullmetal Alchemist), and some anime pins. I also bought a pin, a shot glass and a button from Jennie Breeden, and some other miscellaneous buttons in the artists' alley.

All in all a good con. Lots of great costumes. Didn't take as many pictures as I'd planned. Have shows I am looking forward to checking out:
Gunslinger Girl 2
Soul Eater
Bamboo Blade
Hetalia: Axis Powers

But first I need to get through the stuff I just bought. Then  get more Bleach, Black Lagoon: Second Barage, and the next Death Note box set.

I need more shelves.

Last week, I was on business in St. Louis, and my first night I decided to what I always do. I blew significant chunk of my meal allowance on a truly epic dinner. I had:

2 Hendrick's Martinis
Shrimp Cocktail
House Salad
1 half-bottle Cabernet Sauvignon
Filet Mignon with a HUGE baked potato
Carrot cake
Bailey's and Coffee.

Pre-tip damage $107.65. I think my total allowance for the trip was something like $150. OH YEAH.

So now that I ahve a laptop, I need a laptop bag. What I really want is a bag that will hold my laptop, camera, and associated stuff.

This would be perfect:
Timbuk2 Japan Laptop Camera Bag

But it's not sold in the US, so I guess I will have to get a Timbuk2 laptop bag and a photo bag insert from someplace else. It's kind of vexing.

Also, Elizabeth and the Catapult are a good band.

I'm updating using iJournal, which is a Mac OS X livejournl client. The more astute of you may deduce therefore that I now own a Macintosh computer. I used the annual big birthday check from the 'rents, and some of my own money, to buy myself one of the new aluminum MacBooks. I love this thing. Like my iPod and IPhone it is a beautiful machine. The keyboard feels great. Strangely I seem to make fewer typos on this thing than on any desktop keyboard I use. I really like the big touchpad, too. And syncing the Mac's address book, googe contacts, and phone works flawlessly. Love, love, love this computer.

I'm slowly getting used to the differences between is machine and my PC. The different way of installing applcations was a big surprise. Everything on this omputer is so...simple. The PC's been getting neglected a bit lately.

Went to Annapolis to see Vienna Teng last night. Had a blast. The opening act was great, and Vienna was awesome as usual, and I bought her new CD and got another autograph and got my picture taken with her. It was all I could do not to squee.

I find myself emotionally drawn to people who create things. Musicians, photographers. Hell, even programmers. I suspec it's because such things are beyond my own feeble capacity.

Just ordered these shoes:

Dr. Martens finally has a simple plain brown oxford again. I'm thrilled. Got them off Amazon and there was some kind of promotion that saved me $20.

I may get a pair of these boots, too:

But spending $120 dollars in 2 minutes is enough for one day, I think.

Lens came today.

Let me preface this by saying: "I am an idiot." Turns out the "scratch" on my original lens was a very small, thin, linear piece of stubborn debris.  But, anyway, NEW LENS!!!

It's very nice. It has a "supersonic" motor built in, so it focuses nearly silently. Very sturdily constructed. Huge Focus Ring for easy manual focus. It's a beast, though. Damn thing weighs over a pound. Very pleased with it, though. Can't wait to go out and shoot with it. I think I shall do that this weekend. I love my toys.

Just got off Adorama. Bought the lens. The expensive one. And a filter.

Delivery expected in 4-6 Business Days! *bounces*

I went to Anime Pavilion in Falls Church today, but they didn't have anything on my list. Had lunch at the 4P's, though so the trip wasn't entirely wasted. I really didn't want to come home without any anime at all, though. So I went to Best Buy *shudder*. I picked up one item on my list: Cowboy Bebop, and two other titles not on my list: Ah! My Goddess (first season, the second was done by ADV, which is in trouble, although Funimation supposedly has rescued it), and one other that I'm kind of ashamed to mention.*

I came home, and lied (laid? I always get confused) down for about 15 minutes. I just got up and I realize that I don't want to do laundry or clean today. SO I think I will do that tomorrow. To be honest i really suck at keeping this place tidy. I only get motivated clean really well when I'm planning on having people over. So yeah, I guess I should make plans to have one or more of you folks over for a visit.

All of Planet Bob is currently riding out nuclear war (or wars, depending who's analysis you believe). Anyone want to join in? My alliance could use good people. We'll teach you how to play and help you advance.

* No, it's not hentai. They don't sell that stuff at Best Buy, and I'm not really into hard-core pornography.

Yesterday I went to target and bought a wok-like thing. And some coat hangers.

Then I came home and bought some T-shirts from Think Geek, including one awesome shirt that baranoouji and papercuppie will appreciate.

My luggage made it home yesterday. Today at work I completed some necessary tasks to resolve a "problem" with the rental car company in TX. Hoping I never hear of the matter again.

Apparently my brother is home from Florida for a few days. So I will be going out to my Parents' on Wednesday.

Thursday night is a birthday party. Friday night a farewell happy hour for a co-worker.

The days are just packed.

I bought an 80 GB iPod today. Came home, downloaded iTunes, added all my music to its library. Some stuff got copied twice. Went through and deconflicted. Not all artwork moved over. Connected to iTunes store, fixed most of that. Some couldn't be fund. Currently copying album art off of Amazon and wherever else I can find it and adding manually to albums. What a pain...

I've been pretty good lately about not blowing large wads of money on toys, but I went on a bit of a binge today. I rationalized this with the fact that I consumed all of my anime and manga when I was temporarily cripples the week before last.

On the way home, I stopped by Anime Pavilion and bought the Fullmetal Alchemist movie and Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex, 2nd Gig. One the way there, I was listening to NPR (been doing that for I dunno how long, now. Does this make me an "NPR Listener?") and heard a music review. I decided to buy that artist's CD, so after AP, I went to Borders and picked it up. Also volumes 14-16 of the Fullmetal Alchemist manga, because they were there.

You all probably don't care about any of this, but this is my blog, and I guess I'm the only one who has to care.

I rather like this Kate Nash person.

Hair's looking crappy today, but here's a pic of the new glasses on the new owner:

I made a Coinstar run yesterday.. Netted $34.76 (on a gift cert, so no counting fee, w00t!). I just bought three Cd's on Amazon and only paid $3.21. Score.

Good Day

Today I had breakfast at Bob and Edith's, then I decided to go to the museums. I did Air & Space and American Indian this time. Air & Space because it is my all-time favorite since childhood. American Indian because it's open now. I have to the the National Museum of the American Indian...confuses me. As near as I can tell, there were only four actual exhibits (not counting the boats in the lobby and the displays of stuff in cabinets). Four exhibits in such a large space was disappointing. I did enjoy the dresses exhibit, though. I only went to half of the exhibits because by that time I was hungry and my feet hurt. So I guess I have to go back at some point.  Took many pictures at Air & Space. I'll upload them to flickr later this week and may blog one or two of them here.

I have received my three packages (1 UPS, 2 USPS). Here's what I got

Yomiko Readman from Read or Die. She is a secret agent! And a bookworm! With glasses! She's HOT!

Ryomou Shimei from Ikki Tousen. She is a high-school student. With blue hair! She kicks people's asses! And uses a submission technique that would make her young male opponents very happy...if they weren't being strangled. She is also hot, but in a completely different way.

18-eighteen by Nana Kitade. It has that Indelible Sin song from Fullmetal Alchemist on it. I'm listening right now. I can't understand a damned word of it, but I love it. All the names and titles and stuff are in Kanji, which semagic grabs my music from WMP but doesn't understand, so it makes it all into question marks! LOL

When I got home from Bangkok 54, there was a UPS slip on my door. While dining with my friends I had missed a package. The slip said it was from "R.A.C.S." It took me a few second to figure out they meant Robert's Anime Corner Store. I missed one of my figures!!! I'll have to be home on Monday or remember to sign for them to drop it off.

Damn that was fast. I ordered two days ago and the damn thing shipped just yesterday!

More stuff

I ordered that Nana Kitade CD I was talking about. I also purchased the two figures I've been wanting. Looking forward to packages in the mail!!!

Also, I've registered for Otakon. All the downtown hotels that had blocks of rooms for the con are filled up. Gonna look for something in the B'more suburbs so I don't have to drive as far every day, I think.

So I went to the optometrist today, and got my eyes checked. They've changed, as I expected. Left eye changed more than my right. Also, it changed more this past year than it did in the several years between then and my previous exam. I find this somewhat worrisome. But I guess there is no much I can do about it. Anyway, I selected some frames with the help of the girl at the shop. They are quite different from what I have now, see my icon for comparison. These are what I'm getting:

They are titanium frames. I got them in brown. The sales girl said they looked good on me. I'm inclined to believe her, because her reaction to some of the others she had me try on was quite negative. The place I go to sends the work out, so I have to wait about two weeks. I'm kind of excited about this. I haven't made a big change in eyeglass style for a long time. Not since college, when I ditched the big aviator-style frames I'd been wearing some variation of since middle school and moved to something slightly smaller.

I meant to post about last week, well, last week. But i never got around to it.

So, latest developments. cut for length )

Tomorrow I am going to call my doctor's office and see if I can't get an appointment to get this knee checked out. It is better than it was on Thursday, but still not right. On Thursday, every once in a while I would be walking along and the knee would feel like it was going to go out from under me. I got the same feeling when standing up, except it was also hurt. Now I am walking OK, but it still hurts a little when I am descending stairs. Last night, it really hurt twice. Once at the mall, when I side-stepped quickly to get out of some one's way, and once when getting out of the back seat of Joe's car. I don't think my gout has decided to try my knee this time, because this doesn't hurt like gout does. The discomfort is confined to the font left portion of my knee, bottom half of the joint. I don't know what it is. So I'm going to go to the doctor.

Depending what the doctor says, I may wind up withdrawing my name from consideration for a TDY next month. Actually, I may just do that anyway, because it hasn't yet been decided who's going, and if I pull out now, they will be able to select another candidate from the pool of volunteers, rather than scrambling to find someone else if I back out later. If my knee's acting up on me, I will not be able to perform as effectively on the trip, which would involve much walking around and assorted other stuff. So, yeah, I may just say, "hurt myself; may not be the best person, so talk me of the list." That would be the best for all involved. It sucks.

Yesterday I went to Border's because I had a coupon for 25% off one item. I bought five items:

  • Manga: Hellsing - Volumes 1 and 2

  • Music: Led Zeppelin - Mothership, and Death Cab for Cutie - We Have the Facts and We're Voting Yes

  • Film: Howl's Moving Castle

There's little rationale behind my selections. I just finished the first three volumes of the Hellsing Ultimate OVA (completely disregarding the results of my recent poll) and thought I might like the manga. When I saw the Led Zeppelin on the shelf, I realized I didn't actually have any of their stuff, which struck me as wrong. As for the DC album, I'd heard of the band and heard one song, which I liked, so I decided to buy an album. I have no clue if the song I liked is on this one, but I've had good luck lately with random uninformed music purchases, so I took the plunge. As for Howl, I figured I should own at least one of Miyazaki's works.

I tore through the Hellsing in a matter of hours yesterday, so today I went out and bought volumes 3 and 4. I notice volume 6 of Gunslinger Girl is on the shelves now, so I have to pick that up at some point.

Had dinner with the gang last night. We went to Gordon Biersch. A few folks were less than happy with their food. Mine was surprisingly good, especially considering my sole criterion for ordering the dish was that it came with regular old fries and not garlic fries (yuk!). I find it's hard to go wrong with steak and pommes frites.

Three months until my birthday. I turn 30, this year, and need to decide what, if anything to do to celebrate. I could have a party at my place, but that would involve set-up and cleaning, so I am leaning against that. I think I might  get some friends together for dinner. Smallish number, like maybe ten or so. I think a nice dinner followed by movies and drinks back at home might be a good plan. For me, I think anime and sake would be the best possible plan. If I opt for the latter, I already know where I want to go to eat.

So much to think about. I think I'm going to go watch Fullmetal Alchemist, now.
